How dads are leading the charge for flexible working in the US


Flexible working has been considered a working mother-only issue for too long.  Dads working flexible hours are on the rise.


And it’s not just dads working flexible hours.  Working from home, flex working, and remote jobs are on the rise among millennials as a whole.


Working dads are important partners in leading this process.   But changing the mindset of the American workforce to be more accepting of working from home and flexible working won’t happen overnight.


According to a new survey from the Working Mother Research Institute (WMRI), men say that they consider a flex schedule and part-time work more desirable than commuting to an office every day.


Telecommuting and remote working is becoming more popular.  And in the US, it is becoming more financially viable.


As flexible working has become more prevalent, the benefits are clear to both men and women.  It’s not surprising that working parents still want the option to go to a doctor’s appointment, attend a school event, or volunteer in their community.


Plus, dads working flexible hours say that they experience enhanced well-being and overall happiness.  They also report increased job satisfaction, and increased likelihood to remain at their company.


Flexible working can be healthy for families and for companies.  Dads working flexible hours and remote hours are increasing in great numbers across industries.


According to the WMRI survey, flexibility is the no. 1 thing men want at work.

Some other findings from the survey are below.


  • 77% report having flexible work schedules.
  • 79% feel comfortable using flex.
  • 62% say their employers can and do encourage flex.
  • 68% have the ability to influence their schedule.  And to do so without fear of negative consequences.
  • 47% have a formal flex arrangement with their employer.


The numbers don’t lie.  Flexible working is shifting the conversation around priorities in the American workplace.


US workers are listening, and smart companies should be too.
